Memorial Trees In Ireland
Outside of Armagh, in a townland called Drumconwell, there exists an oak planting project. Set on nine acres of wonderful countryside, and overlooking the beautiful city of Armagh, is Rooted in Ireland. This is historical land indeed, the center of St Patrick's church, and an area steeped in tradition and folklore. Armagh is a modern city as well, boasting a modern 4 star hotel, numerous golf courses, and a wealth of visitor attractions. Many of the nearby villages are worthy of a visit just for their own attractions, and it is an area that, once visited, is never forgotten.
As a visitor, however, one can't but help notice that there is a distinct lack of trees on the landscape. For thousands of years, Armagh was heavily aforested, but now Ireland as a whole has the least percentage of trees of any county in Europe. And this is were our tale of trees and hope begins.
The people behind the project, had spent a long time trying to think of a wholesome and environmentally friendly project, and one that was unique to the area. After reading an article in an Australian newspaper about a similar project over there, the decision was made..they would plant oak trees!. The idea was met with scorn by a lot of people, but the directors of the project decided to press on, and Rooted in Ireland was born. To date, a total of 1700 trees have been planted. The costs of running an ambitious project such as this is met with a rather unique idea; when the trees have been planted, they are then offered for dedication to interested parties, who receive a certificate of ownership, and a frame ready photograph of their tree. The tree number is noted, and the person's name, and an inscription is entered in the tree ledger. The trees have been dedicated for a variety of purposes so far, some as memorials, some as gifts, and others to mark a birth or marriage. The response to the project has been great so far, with most of the dedications coming from America, but some from as far away as Moscow. People from all around the world can see the benefit of a project such as Rooted in Ireland.
The directors have big plans for the project, and intend to ultimately plant 10,000 trees in total. The site will be developed as more trees are purchased, and will include a visitor centre in the style of a famine cottage, a viewing platform, and various decorative features in keeping with the surrounding countryside. The project is currently being considered for funding by various grant bodies including the EU peace fund, and will become an integral part of a visitor's experience when they arrive in Armagh. The directors have been heartened at the help, encouragement, and support that has been given to them by people from all walks of life. It seems that everyone can see the benefit of the Rooted in Ireland ethos, and this is perhaps summed up by the following Greek proverb: " A society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they will never sit in".
