Your Introduction To The Global Warming Debate
It's on the TV. It's on the radio. It's on the Internet. It's on newspapers and magazines. You've heard, seen or read the words "global warming" and witnessed plenty of "people who know" getting emotional and agitated in their discussions. What is it? Some new buzz words that the media made up to fill air time or print space? Is global warming something to be worried about or just good ol' media hype? Why do they call it the "debate" about global warming?
Scientists and laymen alike will tell you that global warming is all about a process. The process of the earth's temperatures rising beyond the reasonable, at rates which appear to predict catastrophes in the making. The world seems to be getting hotter. It's happening more and more, faster and faster. This owing to greenhouse gases, perpetrated by polluting industries dedicated to making the almighty dollar with little or no thought about our tomorrows.
Thirty or forty years into the future-- is that beyond our comprehension? Do we have the future to plan ahead? I remeber a line from the now vintage TV show St. Elsewhere, delivered by the priest who founded the hospital upon which the show was based: "We're here to leave the world better than we found it. Otherwise, what's the point?" Rising temperatures. Alarming storms. Earthquakes becoming more devastating. World-wide flooding. Ice caps melting. Coastlines disappearing underwater. That's global warming for you. Is your interest piqued?
Are we already suffering from global warming? Many believe we are, citing the growing unpredictability of weather conditions and higher temperatures recorded worldwide. Many believe we aren't, attributing these changes to other known or unknown factors-- and often failing to provide scientific evidence to support toheir disclaims. The stakes are high. Our children and grandchildren risk being devastated by the decisions we make today.
Scientists, pseudo-scientists, politicians and celebrities dominate the global warming debate. It's not hard to find someone whose opinions we've come to respect and trust point-blank denying that there is such a thing as global warming. Often, opponents of the global warming theory claim that curtailing greenhouse gas emissions can have a disastrous effect on our economy, with the fallout being far worse than any horrors that global warming could provide. As you can well imagine, both sides of the debate rely on rock-solid and undeniable proof to substantiate their claims.
Those who believe in global warming as a serious threat to our future will often appeal your responsible side, asking you to think about the future welfare of your children and grandchildren. Those who oppose global warming will often present you with pseudo-scientist to back up their claims. Unfortunately, more often than not, they will attack the credibility of global warming proponents without offering rhyme or reason. Behold the two major tactics in the global warming debate!
For better or worse, we are not the only species on this planet. Regardless of anyone's stance on global warming, animals who rely on coral reefs and our waters for their survival will suffer from the growing toxins that we constantly release into the ocean. Wildlife, too, will suffer. Think polar bears. Care to do something abut it?
Will you allow yourself to stand on the sidelines for global warming. Let's hope not. Read the newspapers, watch the media coverage, search the Internet! Take the time to learn everything you can about an issue that affects the fate of our children and grandchildren.
