Health Insurance: Is It Ever Friendly?

Do you understand your health insurance coverage? That's a loaded question, if ever I heard one. Insurance in general and health insurance specifically is usually one major point of confusion in nearly every one's life. While it is impossible to understand fully every aspect of our individual policy it does help if we have a good overview.

One of the most important aspects of health insurance for us to grasp is that you and I really do have a direct impact on the cost of health insurance. And, remember that whether the bill for health insurance is paid by a check from your employer or from your personal checking account, one way or the other you are paying. The tendency lately in society is that many of us think health insurance should cover all things health related big and small. But, we also know that we would never expect automobile insurance to pay for the cost of changing the oil or replacing a light bulb. Some things are more cheaply done by you and me.

Just imagine how high monthly insurance premiums would be if they also had to cover the occasional headache and upset stomach. The cost would be astronomical both for the aspirin and the monthly insurance premium. Over 30 years ago a hospital charged my wife and $.75 for two aspirin. Can you imagine how much they charge now? Compare that to how much you pay for a bottle of 100 aspirin.

In order to be at peace with your health insurance policy it helps if you understand at least what type of policy you have. It doesn't matter who pays for, whether you or your employer. You should understand the basics. You need to know that there are significant differences between the costs and the benefits between a traditional indemnity insurance policy and an HMO. Knowing the difference will minimize ugly surprises in your life.

Tip number three for getting the most out of our health insurance coverage is to remember that we have our own individual responsibility here. While we have every right to expect health insurance to cover the biggest part of cancer treatments and surgery if we develop lung cancer it would serve us well to remember, for instance, that smoking three packs of cigarettes per day is likely to lead to developing lung cancer.

Using common sense ensure your own personal optimal health not only makes for an improved quality of life for you now and 20 years down the road but it also helps to keep down the cost of health insurance for everyone.

It is also relevant to know that health insurance is much more complex than it needs to be because policy provisions vary not only from company to company but also from state to state. Each state's legislator's make their own decisions on what kind of coverage each policy issued in their state must provide and sometimes these are coverage's that the overwhelming majority of citizens will never benefit from but you have to pay the increased cost anyway.

While this makes it impossible to explain to everyone exactly what their coverage is even from state to state it does help if you have at least an overview of what kind of coverage is available to you as an American consumer. Sometimes just having a better over all picture of the health insurance options helps us to lower our own individual cost of health insurance year-to-year.
