Crafts For Boys

If you believe crafts are only for girls you're probably associating it to things like crochet, knitting or scrapbooking. However, there is a wide number of other craft works which boys could be interested to perform.

No problem if a boy wants to do any of the activities mentioned above, but crafts are more likely to be enjoyed by them if they are presented as a more masculine artistic expression. Here are some examples of activities that might be teasing to a boy to engage with:

Woodworking

This craft involves getting dirty hands, hair covered with sawdust, some sweat and sometimes muscular power. Those are some of the reasons why woodworking is considered a manly craft; girls usually choose clean and less physical craft activities.

There is a great range of woodworking activities a boy can pick, from very simple whittling to complex furniture designing or musical instruments making. Those are just some of the many possibilities of crafts a boy can find within woodwork.

Whittling is the art of sculpting animals from driftwood. Beginners on this art should opt to use Balsa wood which is softer and easier to handle. Remember that stronger is the wood harder is to carver it and that keeping your carving tools sharp will make sculpting a lot of easier.

Complex woodworking will require the use of electric tools such as jigsaws and drills to give wood the wanted shape. For this sort of work is better to previously plan what you want to do since you will need to be much more careful while doing it. For design objects and furniture pieces, you will probably]y need to spend more money on good quality wood, and it would be a shame to have to dispose it if something goes wrong as a result of lack of projecting.

Woodworking is definitely a good example of crafts a man could enjoy, but it doesn't mean they cannot try craft arts normally considered as a girly thing. Would you call a footballer a sissy because he does knitting? Well, some of them do it and created pieces to be auctioned for charity.

There is another smelly and sweaty craft that girls wouldn't enjoy and boys may simply love: blacksmithing. Besides of the dirty aspect of this craft, not often we will find girls having enough muscular strength for this activity. However, blacksmithing is not only about powerful arms; it also demands skilled hands and courage to deal with the red-hot iron.

To motivate a boy to go craft the best thing to do is to introduce him to activities which require muscles. However, it doesn't mean a boy can't have interest in more delicate crafts too.
