Do It Yourself Art

Do your walls need livening up but you don't know what to do?

Don't worry - even the most 'artistically challenged' of us can create our own works of art with just a little imagination and a few ideas.

If, like me, you like projects that are quick and easy - you're going to like this.

It's only a small shopping list:

* One box canvas for each piece of art you are going to make. They don't need to be top quality as they won't be seen.

* Enough fabric - either new or used but clean - to cover the canvas(es).

* One of my favorite craft tools - a staple gun.

If the fabric is at all creased you will need to iron or press it first as it needs to be wrinkle-free. Cut the fabric to the size of the canvas plus the depth of the canvas with a couple of inches extra. Simply lay the fabric, good side down, on a table or other surface and place the canvas, also good side down, on top of the fabric.

As tightly as you can, pull the fabric round to the back of the frame and staple to the wood. Just tuck in the corners as neatly as you can - as if you were wrapping a present. It doesn't matter if the back is neat or not as it won't be seen but if there is a lot of spare fabric now at the back, trim it to near the staple or else it won't hang flat against the wall.

Don't forget that the most important thing is that the fabric be taught so the finished canvas will look smooth and professional.

Depending on the size of the canvas you may find it easier with someone to help you as it is not always easy to pull tightly and staple at the same time.

If you have made drapes or cushions for a room, this is a nice way to use the excess fabric as the only cost is a cheap fabric and the end result is a very co-ordinated look. it also works well with upholstery fabrics as you can achieve a look like a tapestry - the corners can be a bit tricky though with a very thick fabric.

My top tip? This works well in a bedroom - particularly when you have bought a bed in a bag and have pieces that you don't want to use. Often you will have a pillow case or unwanted sheet that is the reverse pattern to your main bed cover and this is a great way to use that.
