Follow These 6 Tips To Avoid Becoming An Identity Theft Victim

It's very difficult to not become an identity theft victim. There are however, six simple things you can do to help lessen the risk. Below are the 6 things you can do.

1) Look at your driving report:

Besides protecting your identity, it's a good idea to check your driving record from time to time to see if there are any mistakes. You want to make sure there is nothing there that shouldn't be. If there is, it could mean someone has copied your drivers license. Insurance companies regularly go over your record, and if there is a mark against you, it could mean higher rates, along with the identity theft.

2) Delete, delete, delete...all personal information from any computer that you plan to discard. Take out the hard drive from the computer that you are going to discard, and take a hammer to it.

3) You can use a "wipe" program or drill a few holes in your hard drive.

Do not use your full name on your checks, instead the initials of your first and middle name. Your checks pass through a virtual highway of people who have access to the information on your checks. Never put your social security number on your checks.

Secure Your Mailbox

Get a new mailbox that features a lock and key. There's lots of personal information in your mailbox that identity thieves love to target.

5) Be careful Of What You Put In Your Trash Bin:

Tear up or use scissors with anything that contains private information before discarding into your trash. Identity thieves will look for information in your trash. Even junk mail is a source of information for them, so use caution here.

6) Invest In an Identity Theft Protection Program:

Identity Theft Shield by Prepaid Legal and The Lifelock company will monitor your credit and alert you to any unauthorized activity. Identity Theft Shield will also help restore your credit and name if you ever become a victim. Well worth their low monthly fee.

Put into place the ideas you've just read about.

Take action on the tips listed here.
