How To Deal With Your Dog's Death
For some of us our dog is our best friend. Dealing with the loss of our best friend can be devastating. The more prominent our dog has been in our lives, the harder it is to lose them. Children and single older people can be hit hard by a dog's passing.
If you find that you aren't mentally prepared for that inevitable moment, it can hit you like a ton of bricks. This is compounded when the loss is sudden and without much warning or none at all. If you are facing this difficult time, here are a few things to remember when you are dealing with this kind of grief.
Take some time off. Take a few days off of work. Consider getting away from your home just to be able to reflect on your loss without constant reminders of your departed companion in every corner.
Let it all out. There's no shame in crying. Letting our emotions out is not only normal, it's healthy. Keeping your sorrow locked up keeps you from moving on and you could find your self severely depressed lter.
Talk about your friend to a human friend. Find another dog lover and talk to them. Sharing your relationship is a healing process. As healing begins, you'll want to give away most of your dog's possessions - even if you think you may get a new dog. But consider keeping a favorite picture or favorite toy as a nice memorial.
Find another dog. No, you are not going to find a dog just like the one you lost. In fact, it is a good thing that they will be totally different. It will help get over the loss. Besides, your new dog needs to find their way into your heart. Chances are, it won't take long once you get them home. Make sure you get them all new supplies starting with dog beds, dog collars, new toys and so forth. This way it will be a new beginning for you and your new dog.
Know that time does lessen the depth of the wound. Nothing makes the loss go away altogether but the pain softens and we move forward positively with our lives. Time will not erase your memories so don't be afraid to move forward.
