Prevent Dog Diabetes In 3 Simple Steps
There are essentially three ways that you can help prevent your dog from getting diabetes. This disease is one that you want your dog to avoid so that he lives as long and healthy as possible. And although it's rare, there are many dogs whose diabetes go into remission just by having their diet, supplementation, and exercise all in good order.
1. Cut down on the carbohydrates in your dog's diet. This is probably the most important thing you can do, but it can also be one of the most difficult. That is because some dog foods sold in stores contain as much as 98% carbohydrates. Get your dog on a good diet and you will have taken a big step toward avoiding canine diabetes.
It is a good idea to check to see if your breed of dog is genetically susceptible to developing diabetes. It is particularly important for these dogs to get the right diet to give them the best chance for a longer disease free life.
One breed that is particularly susceptible to developing diabetes is the golden retriever. Although it is one of the most popular breeds, many owners don't do what is necessary to minimize their pet's chance of becoming diabetic.
2. Supplementation could help your dog keep its blood sugar levels under control. It would be good to find a holistic veterinarian in your area who can make recommendations. Often antioxidants and some herbs support the immune system and are sometimes recommended for dogs at risk for diabetes. Be sure to get your veterinarians advice, as you could also do harm to your dog by giving the wrong supplements or too much of recommended supplements.
There are some who argue that too many vaccines can trigger diabetes in your dog. The vaccines, according to this argument, give the dog too many toxins and antigens that can injure your dog's insulin producing cells. Your veterinarian can guide you on this.
Flea medications and tick insecticides can also trigger diabetes from the toxic state produced in the body. By keeping your dog clean of these chemicals and toxins you are helping his immune system stay healthy.
3. Exercise. You knew it was coming. So many dogs get overweight because they are just as sedentary as their owners. It is your responsibility to give your dog the best chance for a long healthy life, and part of that is giving your dog every opportunity to get up and get moving. Not only can you prevent diabetes, but many other conditions as well.
You should walk at least 20 minutes two or three times per day with your dog. Look at it as another stimulus to keep yourself in shape. Now you have an always ready workout partner! And you can keep your workouts interesting by alternating walking with running or swimming.
Nothing surprising here, right? That is because they are the same things you need to do to avoid diabetes. And the good news is that these are simple measures that you can turn into habits. So get out there, eat your vegetables, and get some exercise - and do the same for your dog to help prevent diabetes and many other chronic diseases.
