The Origin Of Shar Pei Allergies

There are many Shar Pei allergies that can be overcome with some careful thought. Unfortunately there are also a number of autoimmune problems that your Shar Pei will face that may end in medical problems requiring professional medical care. Special veterinary care is usually required for some of the allergic skin conditions and even when treated will require constant future management by the pet owner. Combined with strong behavioral tendencies the Shar Pei is not a low maintenance pet and it is also quite an expensive pet to own.

Although these dogs might not have as many wrinkles they are after all pure bred dogs as well. Pure bred dogs usually have some element of cross breeding in them that is not normally a good thing when dealing with diseases of the skin and other Shar Pei allergies as their auto-immune system may not be as strong as it should be.

It is a fact that purebred dogs are typically more susceptible to allergic reactions than the common garden variety of mutts. After hundreds of years of breeding for a particular trait, skill or look many dogs suffer from a reduced ability to manage standard illnesses and a tendency to have some rather weird illnesses as well.

Shar Pei allergies can become a serious concern if they require a vet. Routine veterinary assistance is not typical easy with a Shar Pei and many vets may not approach the dog unless it is under sedation or anesthesia.

As with all dogs they can get an allergic reaction to mites and fleas, but these should be prevented by good general dog care. However, unfortunately even good grooming is sometimes problematic for Shar Pei owners.

As we move into an era of increasing understanding of the dangers we face from our own pets and the world we have created, the Shar Pei continues to be one of the most common household pets.

Shar Pei allergies and skin issues are typically cosmetic and many Shar Pei specific allergies do not really contribute to this short life span. This short life span is rather more a factor of the size of the dog and its behaviors.

Furthermore, their mysterious origins appear to compensate for many of their shortcomings, and there is an obvious demand in today's pet markets for their very unusual look. However, the need for training and the unusual nature of the health of this animal would nominally indicate that this is one pet that needs a truly committed dog owner and not a part-time pet lover.
