How To Get Your Ferret To Use The Litter Box

Ferrets are lovely little animals, who want to make their owners happy. However, you will need to litter train them, as if they need to go, they will go! Ferrets are very trainable and litter training is no exception, especially once you understand their natural habits.

When you are deciding on what litter trays to get your ferret, opt for open ones, as closed ones just will not do.

Now for the litter to put in the trays, I would recommend getting wood chip or clumping litter, which you can buy at most pet shops. You will not need to put a lot of litter into the trays, just enough to cover the bottom of it. That is all a ferret will need to do its business in, unlike the standard cat.

If you are teaching a young ferret to be litter trained, they may play in the litter tray, but don't worry too much about this, as when they realize what is for they will soon stop playing in it.

You are likely to need more one litter tray! You will definitely need to put one inside the cage, but you will need to put other trays in strategic locations throughout the house - remember when your ferret needs to 'go', they need to 'go'! These locations need to be corners, as ferrets naturally seek out corners to do their business in.

You will know what your ferret is planning to do when he goes to a corner, because they will not walk straight up to it, but back into the corner. Ferrets do not dig a hole, or bury their messes, like cats do, so you will need to replace the litter on at least a daily basis, to keep smells at bay.

Now you know to look out for your ferret reversing into the corner, when it does it, pick the ferret up and pop them into the litter tray. Your ferret is an intelligent little critter, and will soon associate the litter tray with where it needs to 'go', and it will actively seek it out.

You must not discipline your ferret when they mess in the wrong place, because they will see it as their general relieving themselves displeases you, not that it was bad to relieve itself in that particular spot. Discipline in this case would lead to your ferret fretting and worrying, every time it needs pee or poop.

The next thing to do is to learn when your ferret is likely to go about its business. Your ferret will need to go when it wakes up, so while you in the training stage, put them in the litter tray as soon as they wake up and keep them there until they relive themselves.

As ferrets are small creatures, they only have little digestive systems so any food or water, eaten or drunk, will come out relatively quickly , so make sure there is a litter tray nearby. Also if your ferret gets very excited, this makes it want to 'go' as well. General playing should not make it want to relieve itself.

As your ferret is very intelligent, the process of litter training should not take very long at all - just a few days. Your ferret will soon learn what a litter tray is for, and where it is expected to go, if it needs to relieve itself.
