Children need works of art in the same way they need science and literature to gain knowledge of the world and how it works. Art is a means of getting at great ideas that cannot be accessed by any other means. Renowned art critic, John Ruskin, said painting was a "noble and expressive language, invaluable as the vehicle of thought."

The biggest barrier for women enrolling in martial arts programs is that they are intimidating. Martial Arts suggest an extremely "testosterone charged" environment. The image of men with a lot of egos and attitude has kept a lot of women from even considering a martial arts program. Instead you choose to go to the gym, enroll in yoga, pilates, take a spin class or even cardio kick boxing (this is NOT a martial art). Even though those are worthy pursuits for your body and your spirit, they do little for you piece of mind. How many times would you consider adding regular self defense training to your schedule

When you are young, everything is new. You are used to learning new skills and being challenged ALL of the time. You have too. As an animal, your very survival depends on your ability to adapt and think. When you are young, you can't be afraid to try new things because EVERYTHING in new!

Children enjoy manipulating art materials and even without guidance they may produce works that have expressive meaning. The activity and chance successes are poor measures of learning. If, as the saying goes, "one picture is worth a thousand words," one truly creative experience in art is worth a thousand aimless experiments with art media. We may experience pride and inner strength that come from shaping forms that express something about ourselves, genuine self-expression is not easy.

One questions I get a lot of is this...should you workout outside of the dojo. Absolutely you should. But the best workouts are not what you might expect them to be. To more perfectly complement your martial type arts fitness, you should have workouts that focus on anaerobic, as opposed to aerobic conditioning, and also on bodyweight exercises as opposed to weight lifting.

I've studied in person with some of the best tai chi masters -- Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang and his brother, Grandmaster Chen Xiaoxing, their students Master Ren Guangyi and Chen Bing, and American students and disciples. I have a collection of their videos and there is a near total lack of actual instruction on them. Not all great masters are great teachers. My best teachers have been Americans--students of these masters--who questioned beneath the surface and explained, in plain English, the meaning of the movements.

From the psychology of Jacques Lacan to the philosophy of Hegel, Surrealism was largely shaped by philosophy, psychology and cultural changes and has been one of the most revolutionary movements in the history of art.
