Tips on Throwing Office Parties for the Holiday
My, hasn't the year gone by fast? We are rolling into the end of the year, which means it is time to throw the annual office holiday party. If you are in charge or involved in putting it on, here is some advice to consider.
Before we discuss festivities, we have to discuss liquid festivities. Yep, I am talking about booze and the office party. Everyone likes a bit of liquid refreshment, but don't over do it. You can ruin the holidays for yourself and your co-workers.
If you go to holiday parties, make sure you take it easy on the beverages. This is particularly true at office parties. Remember, your superiors are going to be there and your conduct will count in their eyes when it comes time for evaluations at work.
Enough of that. When throwing your party, ask yourself what you would have the most fun doing? Bigger companies pretty much have to have a banquet setting given the number of employees, but smaller businesses have more freedom.
If your company has 20 or fewer employees, a more personal party can be a great idea. Try throwing one at the home of the owner. His wife will love the idea even if he doesn't. The party will feel less impersonal than at a banquet hall or restaurant.
If the boss agrees, you are going to have to come up with edibles and drinkables. Checkout the catering options in the area, which don't cost nearly as much as you might think. If things are tight, have everyone bring a dish and share it out.
With the festivities flowing, it is time to think about entertainment. You can hire a band, but the boss probably will not be too keen on having his landscaping trampled and angering the neighbors. Try a gift exchange or indoor DJ.
Sometimes, you just gotta come up with something original. Why not try something like an actual event such as buying everyone tickets to a Christmas play followed by dinner? Just let the ideas flow.
At the end of the day, I suggest you try something different with your holiday party. Most people are sick and tired of banquet rooms and some form of chicken breast dinner. Been there. Done that. Go for something new. If it fails, at least you tried.
