Can You Benefit From an Online Degree Program?

It's true: obtaining a degree-be it an online degree from an online college or a more traditional degree from a "bricks and mortar" institution can open up many opportunities for those who were once preempted from moving up the ladder. Studies indicate that any person can raise their lifetime earnings by several hundred thousand dollars by simply obtaining a higher education degree. Consequently, the increased capacity to access a quality online degree program can be most instrumental in creating a foundation for an enhanced future.

It is clear that there is a correlation between earning power and education. Individuals who possess a high school diploma or GED can make, on average, twice as much as those who have not completed any education at the high school level. However, for those who possess a college degree, they will find themselves earning (on average) twice as much as their peers with only a high school diploma or GED. Obviously, a degree, be it an offline or online college degree can radically change the direction of one's life.

Today, the ease of obtaining an online college degree makes it much simpler than in the past to change the course of one's financial future. The crux of the matter is very clear: individuals who obtain college degrees earn twice as much money over the course of their lifetimes as those without degrees.

Obviously the return on investment is a clear advantage. And the fact remains, that any person can increase his earning potential with today's easy access to online degree programs.

There are no admission requirements to meet and the cost is only a fraction of that required for attending a brick-and-mortar college or university. The progress toward getting an online degree can be made at each student's own pace.

There are no requirements for the amount of credit hours that must be signed up for in any given time period.

In many respects, online educational programs can be very similar to their more traditional counterparts. The degrees and curriculum that are offered online and off-line can be comparable in many ways and certainly create the same type of future earning power for the student with degree in hand.

It is quite possible for students to obtain federal financial aid at certain online colleges. Scholarships and other financial aid may also be offered for students attending online college classes.

However, let the buyer beware: not every online college or university program is a legitimate entity.

Some of these online colleges provide worthless diplomas and are probably nothing more than diploma mills. There are no standards for quality educational practice and the diplomas that they issue are not recognized. Consequently, such diplomas will not open doors to future increased earning power.

"Educational programs" of this nature do a great disservice to the online communityand create undue fear for those who may be considering the option of an online degree program.

However, one can very easily protect him or herself from such scam operations by finding out a very simple bit of information. Is the online educational program accredited? Quality online degree programs are always accredited by an accrediting agency.

Traditional brick and mortar colleges likewise submit to such standards. Some will be accredited and some will not be accredited. The same holds true in the online educational world: some will and some won't be accredited. The fact remains, standards of quality, be it in the real world or the cyber-world, are assured by accreditation.

Clearly, a quality online college degree program can be distinguished by its accreditation just as a brick and mortar college or university can be distinguished by its accreditation. With college degree programs now available online, at a fraction of the cost of more traditional education, AND with the promise of much greater income potential for those who obtain such degrees, it is a wonder why anyone would let such a powerful opportunity slip away. A small investment for today can make a world of difference for tomorrow.
