Watching Out for Diploma Mills

Diploma Mills are also known as Degree mills. These generally institutions that awards or gives individuals academic diplomas with very little, if not no academic studies. Commonly, diploma mills are known to lack the required educational standards and so the diplomas given by such institution are deemed worthless.

In general, diploma mills don't have the official recognition and certification of the academic accrediting bodies. They stay in operation, without any supervision from the educational board. Sometimes, to lure and trick the public, the organizations would claim that they are given accreditation by a non-recognized body. This will make the people think the institution is really authentic, when it really isn't.

Most names of diploma mills are created to sound prestigious. Their marketing strategy are often very misleading as they claim to be endorsed by a fake or dummy accreditation organization. Diploma mills are also known to mislead people to think that their business license is also a form of government endorsement.

Because the diplomas they give out are often used for fraudulent purposes, diploma mills are considered illegal in various countries. One very good example is in Australia. If you call an institution a "university", it can be considered a criminal offense, unless the institution received the approval and accreditation of the Master of Education, Science and Training.

Usually, diploma mills are seen in websites offering online education and degrees. Often times, students can just "buy" their way through the course, paying for the diploma instead of working hard to get it. Some online degrees also give a lower number of course work.

It can be very irksome if you accidentally enroll in a diploma mill, which is why you should find out first if the institution received accreditation. If you want an online degree, call up the college or university first, and verify if the course they are offering is authentic. You can also look up the educational institution on the state educational board, and see if it really is registered or not.
