What Are The Major Golf Tournaments?
Being knowledgeable about a sport does not necessarily mean you will be good at it, but not being knowledgeable certainly means that you won't be! Take golf for instance, it is essential to know about the big tournaments if you want to improve you game. You will learn what clubs the pro players choose for certain shots, how they swing, even what they wear, all of this you can take and adapt into your game to see better results.
U.S. PGA Tournament - The PGA TOUR is a group of golf contests taking place over the duration of the year that have various prizes and competitors. The competitions are thrown at golf courses all across the U.S. from Hawaii to Florida. There are playoffs that take place near the last part of the year. To date, the competitor with the highest total amount of cash won from the PGA TOUR at the moment is Tiger Woods with $77,515,376.
With a prize pool of a cool $7,000,000 then the PGA Championship is one golfing event you definitely want to take part in. In 2007 Tiger Woods won $1.26 million from this event alone. It is one of the major four tournaments and plays in August time usually to finish the year off while the weather is still nice.
The other 3 major championships in golf are the Open Championship, the US Open and the Masters, these are all part of the PGA Tour and all have a hefty winning prize on offer. Each is different and has different requirements, locations and prize funds. Now let's look deeper at each one:
One odd major championship is the Masters. All the others rotate their courses around, but the Masters vehemently refuses to and has been played on the same course (Augusta National Golf Club) since 1934! I guess if it isn't broken don't try and fix it.
The original coat associated with the Master's competition is a coveted inviting, green tinted single breasted coat that is awarded to the winner of the tournament. One notable fact regarding the Masters competition was that Tiger Woods placed 20 records throughout his 1997 win. One of those records was being the youngest winner of the competition at the age of 21.
Each major seems to have their own quirks, and The quirk for the US Open is that it open to amateurs as well, and it allows men and women to play together. It doesn't even have a lower age limit so in 2006 a 15 year old from Hawaii qualified for the tournament!
The Open Championship, a.k.a. the British Open, is a golf competition thrown at varied golf venues in the United Kingdom. It is usually organized the third week of July. The record for total triumphs at the Open Championship is six, held by Harry Vardon, whose final appearance was in 1914. The Open is the first of all the most well-known golf competitions.
