Luggage Has Always Been a Key Part of Your Trip

In the past, choosing the right luggage for your trip was not as important as it is today. In fact, you didn't have much of a choice at all. Most people who were planning to take a trip in the early days of train and boat travel simply took their belongings and packed them into trunks, hoping for the best.

Luggage today comes in many different forms, from the classic square suitcase to more amorphous bags like duffel bags and backpacks. For business travelers, there are also the all important pieces like suit bags and other garment bags - specialty pieces for keeping your outfits neat and tidy.

These trunks were able to work because most people only traveled by train or boat - loading and unloading their luggage just once at the beginning and end of long, laborious trips across land and sea. As travel technology changed, so did the need for more innovative luggage.

When air travel became more popular, so did newer forms of luggage and travel accessories. Trunks were still used when large amounts of clothing and other items were needed to be moved from one place to another, but a new version of luggage came into play: the suitcase.

Make sure that you follow all of the rules of your airline when packing your luggage. This applies mostly to your carry-on pieces, but also be aware of any forbidden items when packing your check-in luggage pieces. When in doubt, leave it home. It's more important to be safe.

Looking for something that is a bit more flexible? Try a duffel bag. While these pieces are less sturdy than the average suitcase, they can hold quite a bit of clothing or other items, and they have the added benefit of being able to be folded up if not needed and placed within another suitcase.

Rolling suitcases are a great benefit to many different travelers, and they come in tons of different shapes and sizes. From very large suitcases that can handle a week's worth of clothing to small backpacks that have wheels at the bottom, these cases can take the strain off of your back.

Now we often see a mix of hard and soft cases, with some people preferring the durability of a "hard shell" suitcase and others liking the maneuverability of a soft-sided case. No matter what material is used, many of today's luggage pieces are found with wheels, for easier movability.

Choosing a suitcase today usually will depend on what method of travel you will be using, the amount of space you need to pack items into, and the amount of money you want to spend on your luggage. With the wide variety of styles available, you are no longer stuck with just one type of luggage.
