Copywriting Like the Pros: Five Forms
If you like writing, try copywriting. Copywriters are promotional writers, and their skills are in huge demand.
If I asked you to write 35 words advertising a brand of soap, could you do it? If you can, you've got a great future as a copywriter.
Copywriters write many different forms of copy. Let's look at five popular forms.
1. Brochures - every business needs brochures
Brochures are short. Some brochures contain just a tagline, a short description, and information on how to respond. Some businesses produce brochures for hundreds of products - think of realtors, and manufacturers.
2. Overviews or white papers are fundamental in business to business
White papers are very popular with businesses selling to other businesses. However, often these creations aren't called white papers. They can be called "news briefs", "reports" or "overviews".
White papers vary in length, from five to many pages, depending on the information they provide; they're a subtle form of selling.
3. Businesses need press releases to get free publicity
It's a little known fact that some 80 per cent of news stories originated with a press release, so press releases are very powerful. You can build an entire copywriting services business just on writing press releases.
Since they're written to a format, press releases are easy to write. As a specialist, you could write several a day.
4. Performance copywriting - write radio spots
Some copywriters specialize in writing for audio, primarily radio advertising, or "spots."
It's easy to break into radio copywriting, because usually DJs are left to write these ads, and they hate it. So get some experience in writing samples, and then ask for an interview at a local radio station.
Radio spots are short. Tape some ads, and transcribe them so you can see how it's done.
5. Ultra short copywriting with taglines and slogans
Taglines and slogans are usually very short, they're a brief bite which encapsulates a service or products.
If you've got a knack for writing memorable taglines, you can specialize in this form of copywriting - many agencies will want your services.
