What Is A Research Paper?

Research papers, term papers, thesis reports, dissertations - all these are mandatory if you want to be an educated person. But it is important that you don't look at these different papers with dread. Going through the process of preparing research papers and term papers will give you the needed experience if you want to excel in your field.

A research paper includes your argument on a particular point and your analysis of a viewpoint. Those who have already finished writing a research paper would have realized that it is rewarding experience. Collecting information from books, articles, people, internet and artwork is only a part of what goes into writing a research paper. The other part is using your intellectual and thinking skills.

While writing a research paper, you do not concentrate on just the literature review but also your own opinions and thoughts on the research paper topic. Whatever be the research paper topic, you need to do your own thinking and back it up with ideas and information that you have collected from other sources. If you take the example of a lawyer, he would have read and researched about different cases and uses that information to support the case that he in working on. Another example is that of a science student writing a scientific research paper, where the student gathers information from various case studies to back up a specific scientific principle. In a similar way, a history student who is writing a research paper on a war would read through every available book, newspaper article or interview related to that particular war in order to strengthen his viewpoint.

A research paper is more or less like an expanded essay. You need to present your own evaluation or interpretation or argument on the research paper topic. While writing a research paper you include all information related to the research paper topic that you have personally come across and also what your personal thoughts on the topic are.

Writing a good research paper needs the following components:

Literature review is an important part of writing a research paper though it is a little time consuming. You need to start working on this as soon as you have decided on the research paper topic. Summarizing and paraphrasing of the collected information is necessary. Literature review is used to evaluate your understanding of the great amount of literature in your chosen field.

Analysis is another part of writing a research paper. You need to break down the information that you have collected, analyze each part and present these component parts by restructuring each part and giving your own opinion on them.

A research paper also includes an argument which means you need to take a stand on the research paper topic that you have chosen. You will have to give your viewpoint and support that with the evidence and information you have gathered.

Usually you do not make use of both analysis and argument in the same research paper. Analysis is mostly used in analytical research papers and argument is used in argumentative research papers. But there are certain exceptional cases where both are used in a single research paper.

For those of you who are confused as to how to write a research paper, there are several websites that provide you with sample research papers, research paper assistance, research paper guidelines and tips on how to write a good research paper. Make use of all these sources to come out with a great research paper to impress your professors and your department.
